Jamaica Transportation

Apart from flying, renting a car is recommend as the best method of Jamaica transportation. To drive a rental car in Jamaica you must be at least 25 years old, and have a valid driver's license from any country. To avoid any hassle on the island, rentals should be reserved by phone in advance on a valid credit card. There are several international rental agencies with offices in Jamaica, including Budget and Hertz, but other local agencies are available if you want to shop around for prices. Typically, a car rental for one week will cost between $400-800 U.S., including compulsory insurance coverage. Driving in Jamaica can be frustrating, as there are frequent obstacles and roads can be hazardous and winding, but renting a car is the only viable option if you want to explore more than one region.

For local travel, your best bet within the Jamaica transportation system is the licensed taxis that can be found throughout the island. The largest taxi service in Jamaica is JUTA, but any taxi bearing red Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) plates is regulated.
